PORT OF CORK CALLS FOR N28 UPGRADE TO BE PRIORITISED

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008: “The Port of Cork is strongly of the view that the N28 upgrading project needs to be prioritised immediately,” according to Brendan Keating, Chief Executive, Port of Cork Company.



With the Tivoli Container Terminal approaching maximum capacity, the Port of Cork lodged a planning application last November to An Bord Pleanála under the Planning and Development (Strategic Infrastructure) Act 2006 for its proposed development of a new Container Terminal with a multi-purpose Roll-on Roll-off berth at Oyster Bank, Ringaskiddy. The EIS which accompanied the planning application clearly states that the relocation of the container terminal to Ringaskiddy cannot happen until the N28 upgrade to dual-carriageway status has taken place.



The Port of Cork is not only a generator of economic activity in its own right but is also a significant catalyst for economic development within the region and an important element in national economic growth. According to the 2006 Indecon report on the economic impact of State Commercial Seaports on the Irish Economy, the value of trade at the Port of Cork was estimated to be €13 billion at a minimum.



“This region has to have infrastructural capacity in order to grow and prosper,” according to Mr. Keating. “The fact that the National Roads Authority (NRA) has no current timescale for the proposed N28 upgrading is of serious concern to both the Port of Cork and the region as a whole.”
