PORT OF CORK SUPPORTS DOCKLANDS REGENERATION
March 4th 20008 - “The Port of Cork is totally supportive of the Docklands Regeneration and we acknowledge and accept the Port’s key role in helping Cork to realise its full potential as a Gateway City. However there is a need for agreement in relation to re-location and funding”, Brendan Keating, Chief Executive Port of Cork said to-day.
Mr. Keating pointed out that the City Quays are valuable working assets, which contribute to the viability of the Port. The North Quays and South Docks are busy working quays, handling approximately 1 million tonnes of trade annually.
To continue the success of the Port’s trade for the region and to ease the current constraints, such as depths and vessel size at the Tivoli container terminal, the Port of Cork needs to re-locate container traffic to the proposed Oyster Bank Development in Ringaskiddy. Concentration of the Port facilities in Ringaskiddy is dependent on the N28 upgrade. Timing is critical to the project and is a major priority.
After a series of public consultations and the preparation and publication of a comprehensive Environmental Impact Statement, the project is now being assessed by the statutory approval process, by way of a planning application which is being handled by An Bord Pleanala as a key infrastructural development. Following a number of objections to the proposed re-location an oral hearing has been announced which is due to start on 2nd April 2008. If approved the new container terminal will need to be operational by 2012/2013.
This year, 2008, shows every sign of continuing the Port of Cork’s steady growth and progress. There are an expected 52 cruise ships due to visit the Cobh cruise terminal which will see over 72,000 passengers visiting the Cork region. The Port of Cork is committed to improving its port facilities including additional dredging at the Cobh terminal to permit the handling of Royal Caribbean’s Freedom class ships.
